Introduction

Artificial intelligence contributes heavily to the battle of cyber-threats versus cybersecurity, on both sides of the war.

As the popularity of AI rose, different “models” of AI have developed consequently. One is Generative AI, which refers to a type of artificial intelligence that can create brand-new content based on the data it has been trained on.

Have you heard stories about AI that can create new text, images, music, or even code from scratch? That’s Generative AI.

How Does Gernative AI Work?

Unlike traditional AI, which typically analyzes and processes existing data, generative AI can produce original outputs that mimic human creativity. This naturally poses questions and concerns for artists in various industries all around the world.

Some common applications of generative AI include:

  • Text generation that writing articles, stories, or even code.
  • Image creation that generates realistic images or artwork.
  • Music composition and creating new audio tracks.
  • Chatbots that engage in human-like conversations.

Generative AI models use deep learning to learn from whatever data is fed to the machine. Generative AI can understand patterns in data and therefore generate new content that follows those patterns.

The Good and Bad of Generative AI

Although this technology is undoubtedly useful, it still contains many of the same concerns surrounding all artificial intelligence. These models can generate convincing but false information, contributing to the spread of misinformation and fake news. They can also create content that closely mimics copyrighted material, leading to potential legal issues.

We must also consider bias concerns. Generative AI models can perpetuate and even amplify opinions present in their training data, leading to discriminatory outcomes. Remember, AI models train on human-created data, and thus can perpetuate the same biases, even unconscious ones. To maintain a more balanced viewpoint, do your own research on any new piece of information you learn from AI, and don’t blindly trust and spread AI-generated “facts.”

The use of personal data to train AI models also raises significant privacy concerns, especially if the data inadvertently includes sensitive information without the subject’s knowledge or permission. Do your part by not sharing personal information with AI that you interact with. Mentioning your private data can swiftly escalate into a breach of privacy.

Then there are the concerns with deepfakes: The ability to create realistic but fake images, videos, and audio. Bad actors use this technology maliciously, undermining trust and authenticity by imitating real entities. Phishing scams often use deepfakes as a convincing mask to convince victims to let their guard down.

Conclusion

While AI can be an extremely useful tool for building ideas, it’s important not to rely on them too completely. AI can always be manipulated, biased or used to breach your privacy. Remember that all AI models are owned by someone, and they may collect all kinds of data from your conversations based on the fine print.

Generative AI offers many benefits, but you need to stay aware of the risks and use the technology responsibly. Staying cybersecure means understanding the latest technology and using it responsibly.
